Urgent recall for nut butter sold in major supermarkets – ‘do not eat’

An urgent food recall has been issued for a nut butter sold at big supermarkets like Ocado, Whole Foods and Holland & Barrett because it contains undeclared allergens.

Biona is recalling its cashew butter as it contains three nuts that aren’t listed on the label, which could cause dangerous allergic reactions.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced the recall on its website, saying: “Biona is recalling Biona Organic Cashew Nut Butter because it contains almonds (nuts), hazelnuts (nuts) and peanuts which are not mentioned on the label.

“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to almonds (nuts), hazelnuts (nuts) and peanuts.

“Any customers who have bought the product should return it to their retailer for a full refund. We apologise for any inconvenience to our customers.”

The batch being recalled is coded E233189, with a use-by date of December 31, 2026.

The FSA warned those with allergies to almonds, hazelnuts and peanuts, “do not eat it”.

They added: “For further information, please contact Biona Customer Service department on 02039413628 or at info@biona.co.uk.”

Nuts – specifically cashews, hazelnuts and pistachios – are known to be a common source of food allergies around the world.

A nut allergy is an immune response to the unique proteins found in nuts, which usually triggers symptoms within minutes.

Around one in 50 children and one in 200 adults in the UK have a nut allergy.

A severe reaction to nuts can lead to anaphylaxis which is considered to be one of the most serious types of allergic reactions.

If a reaction occurs, the person should be given an adrenaline (epinephrine) injection immediately to avoid life-threatening complications.
